Saagara Sangamam’s marathon run @ Pallavi, Bangalore!

This is really once in a decade kind of a run. Pallavi theatre used to be a safe haven for class movies in Bangalore. I can’t forget the number of cars that turned out for the Tamil version of Thalapathi in this theatre on the first day. Eating Nippat (Karnataka’s version of Chekkalu) before entering into the hall and Veg cutlet at the canteen during the interval were a derigour for us. “Roja”, “SinnaGounder”, “Sarpayagam” are some of the movies I watched in this theatre during my college years. RaviTeja’s Krishna was the last film for me at this strategically located theatre.

Saagara Sangamam in Visakhapatnam!

Sagara Sangamam‘s 45 days revenues of 5,03,069/– at Sangam A/C were mentioned as a record for Andhra and Ceeded regions. If so, the 50 days gross collections of Eeenaadu (4,88,826/-) in the same theatre will logically be a record for these two territories. Saagara Sangamam released on 03/06/1983 while Eenaadu made its box-office debut on 17/12/1982. RebelStar’s Trisoolam (22/12/1982) also did an amazing business in the city. It collected 8,71,699/- in 107 days at Sarat A/C.

Motion Picture Event of the Year 1984!

There were bigger hits than this in the year but the hype surrounding KanchuKaagadaa was so much that the film was screened in 9 extra theatres (113) on the first day.  Mini-Cut outs were kept at every important centre in my home town. People hired to place the huge cutout @ Nartaki 70mm A/C could not complete the job on time as it was pouring heavily on the night before the release day. The cut out was so big (but not the biggest as PrajaaRajyam had a massive one inside Radha theatre) that the torso itself crossed the theatres’ elevation. Since I already shared the collection details of this films’ collections in centres like VJY, NLR, Guntur, I want to share a scan which has details of its openings in Vijayalakshmi A/C, Bhimavaram. KK crossed the I week collections of Merupudhaadi and (created a  District Record of course with more no of shows). The movie ended up in the safe zone everywhere due to the phenomenal openings.

Girafthaar in Tenali!

Congratulations to the Shehanshah, the second Pan India Superstar for getting the Dhaadha Saheb Phalke award. Hope Government also recognises Rajesh Khanna, the first Superstar of India, with the most coveted movie related award.

Once upon a time in Tollywood XIV — Premamandhiram vs Yamakinkarudu in VSP!

Here is another interesting box-office Anomaly. Per the first ad issued by Kamal Talkies, Yamakinkarudu collected 1,74,277/- in 17 days. That means Suresh Productions PremaMandhiram, inspite of collecting 1,59,308 in 11 days (see the second image) did not collect even 14,969 (1,74,277 – 1,59,308) in another 5 days. This clearly implies that Premamandhiram went into a deficit in the second week itself  as its’ per day collections from Day 12th to 17th would hover around Rs 2994/- (14.969/5 =2994) per day. But that may not have been the case as PremaMandhiram could not have run for more than 60 days in this theatre with this revenues. Since YamaKinkarudu collections were declared by the exhibitors, I am inclined to believe that Suresh Productions exaggerated the openings of PremaMandhiram in Visakhapatnam.

Rao Gopala Rao gets S.V.R. Award -17/6/83!

The essay by Shri Mohan Kumar garu is quite informative as it mentions the details of the first film of this regal actor. It is not “Jagath Kilaadeelu” as it is widely believed.
